Unite the union has responded to plans by the RNLI to close its Inshore Lifeboat Centre.

Around 70 staff are employed at the RNLI Inshore Lifeboat Centre in East Cowes, where teams carry out specialist work building, maintaining and repairing lifeboats used across the UK. The site supports more than half of the charity’s 238 lifeboat stations.

The RNLI has confirmed the facility will close by 2028 at the latest, following a review of its operational requirements. The decision is expected to result in job losses and has prompted concerns about the impact on skilled workers and the wider Island community.

The centre has been a key part of the RNLI’s operations for over 60 years, producing and servicing nearly 2,000 lifeboats during that time.

Since plans were first outlined last year, discussions have been ongoing between staff, management and union representatives.

Unite the Union has raised concerns about the proposals and is seeking further talks with the charity.

General secretary Sharon Graham said:

"It is extremely disappointing that the RNLI is determined to close this vital base. Should this go ahead, it will have a devastating impact on our members and their families.

"Our members must not be high and dry. The RNLI must work with Unite to save these vital jobs."

The RNLI has said it will continue engaging with staff as plans progress, including exploring support options during the transition period.
