Islanders are set to see speed limits drastically reduced for at least three years, after a radical motion was passed by Councillors at an emergency meeting late last night (Monday).

The move will see 20mph limits enforced across ALL Island roads from the hours of 7am to 9am and 4pm to 6pm until April 2028, inclusive of Monday to Friday other than Bank Holidays.

The 20mph limit will be in place from tomorrow (Wednesday), with safety cameras used to monitor drivers' speeds and a zero-tolerance policy in place for those caught driving above the limit during the affected hours.

Councillor for Transport and Speed Control, Carlton Banks, welcomed the move saying:

"It's not unusual to be passed by anyone - these drivers are wild stallions who need to be put on a leash - I have experience in this field, having assisted my errant cousin through his troubled childhood.
"The term 'rush hour' has seemed so apt in the past — many drivers hurrying to get to work with no mind for the chaos this causes to other road users.
"This change aims to bring an air of relaxation to the Island, and we categorically deny that these logical hours it will be in place for have anything to do with me working between 10am and 3pm."

Bert Ghent, an Island resident since 1953, was one of many feeling cock-a-hoop at the decision, stating:

"We shouldn't really have cars over here, but if we have to then they should at least stick to a slow pace - this isn't Silverstone and these youngsters aren't Stirling Moss.
"I felt quite uncomfortable one morning when a loud engine startled me whilst dunking my morning digestive into my cup of tea, causing several drops of the tea to splash onto my third favourite pair of brown corduroy slacks.
"Try as she might, my wife Margaret could never rid them of those stains, and I've been campaigning for a lower speed limit ever since. Now I can wear my morning togs in peace once again."
