A new art studio space is set to open inside Sandown Town Hall, as a major transformation of the historic building continues.
The 156-year-old hall on Grafton Street has undergone significant structural and cosmetic improvements, led by Isle of Wight Council, while preserving its heritage.
Part of the building was already reopened earlier this year as a youth hub, and now a second space is being brought back into use.
It will be leased to GRAFT Studios, offering dedicated workspaces for artists, makers and creatives.
Founded by Adumbration Arts, the studios will provide a shared environment for a range of creative practices — from visual arts to traditional crafts — with a focus on collaboration and community.
Plans also include workshops, open studio events and partnerships to help connect artists with the wider local community.
Creative Director Emma Souter said the project is an exciting opportunity that will evolve with the people who use the space, adding that creative hubs can play a key role in revitalising towns.
The wider redevelopment of Sandown Town Hall has been supported by £3.1 million from the Government’s Youth Investment Fund, helping bring the building back into public use.
Alongside the new studio space, a youth programme run by Community Action Isle of Wight is already underway, providing activities including sport, study sessions and music facilities.
Councillor Julie Jones-Evans said the project marks an important new chapter for the building, creating opportunities for both young people and the Island’s creative community.
Local councillor Ian Ward added that the transformation is a positive step for Sandown, helping to build momentum and bring fresh energy into the town.
The council says the project will help strengthen community links while supporting creativity and regeneration in the Bay area.
