Festival-goers travelling on the Isle of Wight are being warned to prepare for potentially difficult journeys, with forecasters issuing a weather warning for dense fog that could cause significant disruption across the Island.

The IW Met Service has issued a fog warning covering the period from 6pm this evening (Wednesday) until 11am on Friday, with a 90 per cent chance of the weather event occurring.

Visibility is expected to deteriorate rapidly overnight as low cloud and hill fog gradually descend to sea level.

Forecasters say the fog is likely to spread across much of the Isle of Wight after dark, becoming locally very dense in places and reducing visibility to hazardous levels.

The warning comes as thousands of people prepare to travel to the Island for the start of the Isle of Wight Festival at Seaclose Park.

Drivers are being urged to take extra care, particularly on higher ground and along exposed coastal routes where visibility could be severely restricted.

The fog is expected to lift across many areas on Thursday morning, although some coastal locations may remain shrouded for much of the day.

Conditions are then forecast to worsen again on Thursday evening and overnight, with another spell of thick fog likely before eventually clearing during Friday.

Cross-Solent travellers are also being advised to check before they travel, with the IW Met Service warning that ferry services could face delays or cancellations while the fog persists.

Forecasters say confidence is high that fog will develop, although the exact timing of its eventual clearance on Friday remains uncertain.
