A community fundraising challenge is taking place in Newport this week to raise money for a service helping Isle of Wight cancer patients get to hospital appointments on the mainland.

Skaters will take part in a 10-mile sponsored indoor skate at Skates in Newport on Thursday 27 August, with the event running from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

The fundraiser is supporting Daisy Ring Bus CIC, a volunteer-run service providing transport for Island cancer patients travelling to hospitals in Southampton and Portsmouth for treatment and appointments.

The service now carries around 2,000 passengers every month, helping patients make what can be frequent and difficult journeys to access vital healthcare.

Money raised from the sponsored skate will help cover the running costs of the service, including fuel and vehicle maintenance.

Anyone is welcome to get involved by taking part in the skate, sponsoring those taking part or simply coming along to show their support.

Taking part in the skate is free.

People interested in joining can practise their skating skills and sign up at Skates between 6.30pm and 8pm every Wednesday evening in August.

The event will take place at Skates, Unit E4, Harbour Quay, Newport.
