Isle Of Wight Cricketers Star In Hampshire’s National Championship Triumph

Two Isle of Wight cricketers have played starring roles as Hampshire Cricket Board D40 were crowned national champions after beating Lancashire Disabled CC by 117 runs in the D40 National Championship Final.

Islanders Kevin Cooper and Freddie Gurney both made major contributions to Hampshire's impressive victory.

Cooper produced a superb unbeaten 156, while Gurney scored 50 before taking three wickets for just 15 runs with the ball.

Hampshire were soon in trouble after choosing to bat, losing two wickets with just 13 runs on the board.

Cooper came in at number three and steadied the innings before being joined by Gurney after the third wicket fell at 90.

The pair then took control, putting together a 145-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Cooper reached his century from just 82 balls and went on to finish unbeaten on 156 from 113 deliveries, hitting 14 fours and eight sixes.

Gurney provided excellent support with a quick-fire 50 from 42 balls, helping Hampshire reach 284 for seven from their 40 overs.

Lancashire started their reply positively, but Gurney then played a crucial role in turning the match in Hampshire's favour.

He conceded just 15 runs in seven overs, including two maidens, while taking three wickets.

Lancashire's challenge subsequently collapsed and they were bowled out for 167 in 32.3 overs, giving Hampshire a 117-run victory and the national title.

It was an outstanding day for the two Island players, who contributed 206 runs between them before Gurney's impressive bowling spell helped seal the championship.
