A beauty therapist with more than 16 years’ experience has been given the go-ahead to open a salon in a garden outbuilding on the Isle of Wight, following strong local support.

Council officers have approved plans from Caymen Collins for a “sustainable home-based business” at a property in Queens Road, Sandown.

The proposal will see a small beauty salon operate from an outbuilding behind 8 Queens Road.

According to submitted documents, the salon will run on an appointment-only basis between 8am and 7pm Monday to Friday, and from 8am until 2pm on Saturdays.

A decision report from County Hall on application 25/01857/FUL states:

“The application site is within a Key Regeneration Area and would provide a small-scale service for the community in this part of Sandown.
“Although the immediate surrounding area is residential in character, the nature of the proposed business use would not be industrial and would be small scale, enabling the applicant to work from their home.
“Therefore, the proposed use as a beauty salon at 8 Queens Road would be considered appropriate in the context of the surrounding area and would provide the ongoing use of a well utilised service, which would be convenient and beneficial to the local community.”

The council received 13 letters backing the plans. Supporters said the business would be quiet and non-intrusive for neighbours, while the treatments offered would have a positive impact on personal wellbeing.

A submitted planning statement said:

“Planning permission is sought for the change of use of the single-room outbuilding to a small beauty salon.
"The salon will be operated solely by myself. I have over 16 years’ experience in beauty therapy on the Isle of Wight and I’ve been self-employed for the past eight years.
“The salon will operate on an appointment-only basis and will contain one massage couch, one manicure table, a seated area, storage and a worktop.
"There will be no additional staff working.”
