Isle of Wight MP, Richard Quigley, has reacted after MPs voted in favour of the assisted dying bill yesterday (Friday).
The bill will legalise the right for terminally ill people in England and Wales to end their own life with medical assistance.
In a historic vote, MPs voted 314 to 291 in favour of the bill, backing the right for adults with less than six months to live to choose to end their own lives.
Richard Quigley MP said:
"This bill was always going to be emotional, but it was never about winning or losing, but having the chance to debate.
"We have done that and the bill has now passed, my opposition is based on the belief the safeguards, particularly around the so-called 'Anorexia Loophole’, are not robust or comprehensive enough.
"As the bill moves to the House of Lords, I urge peers to apply rigorous scrutiny.
"It is essential that every aspect of its implementation is thoroughly examined, with close attention to the risks and unresolved unintended consequences."
