Residents Evacuated After Fire At Ryde Care Home

Residents have been evacuated from a specialist assisted living home in Ryde after a fire broke out this morning (Monday).
Firefighters were called to Newton Lodge on Appley Rise at around 10.15am, with crews from Newport, Ryde and Shanklin attending.
Most residents were able to leave the building, while firefighters wearing breathing apparatus helped others to safety. Some of those living at the home have learning difficulties.
The fire is understood to have started on the first floor and was brought under control relatively quickly.
Crews used two hose-reel jets to tackle the blaze, while positive pressure ventilation was deployed to clear smoke from the building.
Appley Rise and Ampthill Road are currently blocked, with cordons in place while firefighters deal with the incident.
