Ferry firm Red Funnel has launched a new book exchange initiative, just in time for National Read a Book Day (6 September) and ahead of the Isle of Wight Literary Festival (9–12 October at Northwood House, Cowes).
The ‘Read Funnel Library’ is now in place at the Hi-Speed terminals in Cowes, giving passengers the chance to pick up something new to read as they travel.
The idea came from one of Red Funnel’s Cabin Attendants, who suggested it through the company’s First-Class Ideas scheme.
Travellers are encouraged to swap books — and if they don’t have one to leave behind, they can make a small donation instead.
Proceeds will go to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, Red Funnel’s Charity of the Year.
Children’s books are especially welcome to keep younger passengers entertained.
Fran Collins, CEO of Red Funnel, said:
“We love seeing creative ideas like this come from our team.
"We hope our customers enjoy the new ‘Read Funnel’ library; whether it sparks inspiration, adds a touch of adventure, or simply offers a relaxing moment with a good book.
"The Isle of Wight has remarkable connections to some of the most influential literary figures in English history, so the book exchange is also a lovely nod to this rich heritage.”
The Island’s literary links include Lord Tennyson, who lived at Farringford; Charles Dickens, who holidayed in Shanklin and Ventnor; and Jane Austen, who was a regular visitor and famously referred to the Isle of Wight simply as “The Island.”
The book exchange also forms part of Red Funnel’s wider Changing Tides ESG strategy, which aims to strengthen community spirit and sustainability.
