A mattress fire at a block of flats in Cowes has led to the launch of a petition calling for the eviction of some residents.

Fire crews from Cowes and Newport were called to Moira House on Sun Hill at around 5.45am on Sunday following reports of a fire.

Firefighters used a hose reel to extinguish the blaze, which was contained to a mattress inside a bedroom. No injuries were reported.

The incident prompted the evacuation of residents onto the street while emergency services dealt with the situation.

In the aftermath, a petition has been launched calling for the “immediate eviction” of certain tenants at Moira House. The petition’s author claims that ongoing issues involving alleged drug and alcohol abuse are putting other residents at risk.

At the time of writing, the petition has received 37 signatures.

Police have confirmed that enquiries into the incident are ongoing, and no arrests have been made.
