Eighty-five years after the call to Dunkirk, Newport Quay now bears a lasting tribute to six Island vessels and their civilian crews who sailed from the harbour in 1940 to take part in Operation Dynamo.
On Saturday 30 August, relatives, dignitaries, and members of the public gathered for the unveiling of a new memorial cairn, funded by public donations and crafted by Duncan Bird of Freestone Stonemasonry.
Two plaques honour the ships and crews – one listing names first unveiled in 1990, and a new one providing historical context for future generations.
The initiative was driven by descendants Mike Wills and Jodi Smith, whose family connections to The Bee and MFH ensured the heroic story of Newport’s “Little Ships” would be remembered.
“They didn’t see themselves as heroes, but they were,” said Jodi Smith.
“This memorial isn’t just stone and metal; it’s a promise that we’ll keep telling their story, honouring their courage, and remembering the quiet bravery that helped turn the tide of history.”
In May 1940, sixteen men from the Isle of Wight and four from Portsmouth sailed six Island vessels across the Channel under enemy fire, rescuing troops from the beaches of Dunkirk.
Miraculously, all returned home safely, later resuming their peacetime duties across the Solent.
Councillor Ian Dore, Isle of Wight Council chairman, who officially unveiled the cairn, reflected:
“These were individuals with limited or no military experience, sailing into a maelstrom to assist their fellow man.
"Their courage turned what was a military disaster into a story of heroism – the true embodiment of the Dunkirk Spirit.
"The cairn is a glorious addition to Newport Quay, ensuring their legacy lives on.”
The ceremony featured buglers from the Medina Marching Band, four standard bearers from the Royal British Legion, a two-minute silence, and a chance for relatives to meet fellow descendants for the first time.
The organisers thank everyone who generously donated, ensuring that the bravery and sacrifice of Newport’s Little Ships will never be forgotten.
