With plenty of serious headlines around, here’s something a little lighter – Heinz Beanz is celebrating its 140th birthday on 26 March, and the numbers behind Britain’s favourite tin are huge.

First sold in the UK in 1886, baked beans have become a national staple, with Brits eating more than anywhere else in the world – around one and a half cans each per week.

At peak production, up to two million cans are made every day at the company’s Wigan factory – nearly a billion beans daily, with production running at almost 20 cans every second.

From an Island perspective, the total number of beans produced over time could fill Carisbrooke Castle around 150 times – or Osborne House more than 100 times over.

Even closer to home, it’s estimated those beans could fill the Isle of Wight Radio studios more than 220,000 times.

Despite the massive scale, the famous Heinz recipe remains a closely guarded secret – known in full by just four people.

After 140 years, it seems Britain’s love for beans on toast is showing no signs of slowing down.
