When Wessex Cancer Support suddenly withdrew the Daisy Bus service on August 20, with less than three weeks’ notice, Island cancer patients were left facing daunting and costly journeys to Southampton General Hospital.
The bus had been a lifeline, taking passengers directly from the Red Jet terminal and sparing immune-compromised patients the risks of using public transport.
In the days that followed, the Island community rallied round. A rapid fundraising campaign brought in more than £12,000, allowing a temporary minibus taxi service to be put in place — though at a cost of over £1,000 a week.
Now, a long-term solution is taking shape. A new Community Interest Company (CIC) has been formed to purchase and operate a dedicated vehicle, under a new name: the Daisy Ring Bus.
The daisy symbolises hope and renewal, while the ring represents continuity, connection, and the circle of care surrounding every patient.
Chairman Michele Newton said:
“The initial response was phenomenal. Patients are so grateful for the support of the community — it’s been truly humbling.
"You may have thought we’d gone quiet, but we’ve been working hard behind the scenes and planning for the future.
"More plans will be announced over the next few weeks, with details of the fundraising target and how we plan to keep the wheels of compassion turning.”
The CIC directors — all well-known in Island business and community life — have pledged to secure the service for the long term. Joining Michele are:
Sophia Brading, founder of Colloco Marketing, who lost her father to cancer and saw first-hand the importance of the Daisy Bus.
Chris Cornford, owner of PrimeDrive Vehicle Rentals, Shalfleet Garage and director of the IW Observer, whose family experience of cancer makes the cause close to his heart.
Josh Harris, owner of Wight Coaches, who brings over 15 years’ transport industry expertise.
Stephen Webster, Chartered Accountant with extensive business and finance experience.
The first organised fundraising event for the Daisy Ring Bus will be one of Tracy Asher and Pete Skinner’s popular charity quiz nights.
Taking place at Newclose Cricket Club, Newport, on Friday, October 10, the event will start at 7.30pm (doors open 7pm).
