A new banking hub in the heart of an Isle of Wight coastal town will have a shopfront with lit up signage, red and white lettering and a Post Office logo.
Cash Access UK’s advertisement proposals for a premises at 6 High Street in Cowes, formerly a Poundland store, have been accepted after County Hall concluded the plans would not harm the character and appearance of the area.
In June, the local authority refused a previous bid at the site over conservation concerns.
A representation from a council officer at the start of August said the revised scheme is ‘more respectful’ of the existing shopfront’s decorative features.
Cash Access UK’s agent, Ridge, told planners: “Advertisement proposals include the installation of a main sign featuring individual ‘Banking Hub’ letters and a ‘Post Office’ logo fixed directly onto new timber fascia panel and a projecting sign featuring ‘Banking Hub’ letters and ‘Post Office’ logo.
“Both signs will be externally illuminated with a trough light above each sign. Within the shopfront windows, proposals include an illuminated directory of services and bank availability poster, a marketing poster and a community vinyl message.”
Cowes Town Council (CTC) previously said it has no objection to the application.
A spokesperson said: “CTC planning and licensing committee has no objection to this planning application as long as the following comment is taken into consideration: that any illuminated lights are appropriate for the High Street location given its conservation nature.
“If planning is approved, the light should be turned out at 11pm to avoid light pollution that impacts nocturnal wildlife.”
The advert consent includes eight conditions for reasons including local amenity, protecting the character and appearance of the conservation area, legislation and planning policy.
