£1.8m Overhaul Planned For Isle Of Wight Accident Hotspot

A £1.83 million transformation of the notorious Vittlefields Cross junction on the Isle of Wight is now on the cards, a new report shows.

The scheme forms part of County Hall’s Local Transport Delivery Plan (LTDP) for 2026/27 to 2029/30, due to be voted on by the economy, regeneration, transport and infrastructure committee (ERTIC) next Thursday (September 3).

Vittlefields Cross is the ‘number one accident cluster site’ on the Island, according to a council report.

It says remodelling the junction was highlighted and recommended within Island Roads’s annual Network Safety Improvement Report.

The council has listed an April 2026 development start date for the scheme as well as three other milestones: complete development in April 2027, start delivery in June 2027 and compete delivery in March 2029.

According to the local authority, the LTDP sets out how Whitehall transport funding will be prioritised to support the delivery of the Island Transport Plan, including investment in road safety, junction improvements, drainage, active travel, accessibility, public rights of way, bus services and electric vehicle infrastructure.

In May 2025, two vehicles were caught in a collision at Vittlefields Cross – just over a year after a crash which left one person with a minor injury.

A woman was killed and several others were seriously hurt at the junction after a major incident involving cars and a bus in April 2019.
