A ‘multi-million pound’ McDonald’s restaurant could open on the outskirts of an Isle of Wight village.

The fast-food giant has lodged an application with County Hall for a new branch with a ‘drive thru’ facility off Newport Road in Lake.

McDonald’s says the outlet is expected to employ ‘more than 120 full and part-time staff’ which it hopes to ‘recruit from the local area’.

Its application also includes plans for car parking, landscaping and associated works.

If approved, the branch will be the Island’s third McDonald’s and second with  drive thru capacity.

An existing KFC sits immediately to the northwest of the application site.

A submitted statement said:

“The proposals provide the opportunity for McDonald’s to meet a long-standing requirement for a restaurant to serve this catchment area, to meet customer demand and introduce additional choice in the market.
“The proposed development represents a multi-million-pound investment creating jobs both during the construction and operation phases, resulting in many associated economic benefits for the local area.
“The proposal constitutes sustainable development on a brownfield site, in a commercial area, surrounded by similar and compatible uses.
“Sufficient parking has been provided at the restaurant with accessible parking located as close to the restaurant entrance as possible.”

A public consultation on the application is due to finish on June 2 and a decision is expected on June 25.
