Just as many drivers may have thought they had endured the worst of it, another major disruption is looming on one of the Isle of Wight’s busiest roads — and patience among motorists is likely to be tested once again.

Southern Water has confirmed that Newport Road in Lake will close completely in both directions for nine days from Monday 1st June until Tuesday 9th June as part of ongoing water mains improvement works.

The closure will affect the main route linking Newport and Sandown outside Sandown Airport — a road many Islanders rely on daily and one which has already been the source of frustration for months.

Since March, drivers have been navigating lengthy delays caused by two-way temporary traffic lights on the route.

Now, with a full closure planned to allow crews to safely access underground pipework, disruption is set to intensify.

For many motorists, the announcement may feel like the latest chapter in a growing catalogue of roadworks across the Island, with closures and traffic management measures increasingly becoming part of everyday journeys.

The timing is also unlikely to ease concerns. The works are due to begin at the start of June — a period when traffic typically begins to build with improving weather and rising visitor numbers ahead of the summer season.

Questions are likely to be asked over what impact the closure will have on surrounding routes, with fears of congestion spreading onto diversion roads and nearby communities already facing separate works.

Drivers are being advised to allow extra time for journeys, although for many who have already spent weeks negotiating traffic restrictions, that advice may sound all too familiar.
