Staff at Monkey Haven have paid tribute to one of their residents, Malta, following the sad news of his death.

In a heartfelt message shared by the sanctuary, the team described Malta as a much-loved monkey who had overcome a difficult start in life after being rescued from the illegal pet trade.

He was discovered at Malta Airport by colleagues at Stichting AAP before being taken in by the Isle of Wight sanctuary.

From the moment he arrived, staff say Malta was given the safety, companionship and care every animal deserves.

Malta also lived with epilepsy, which required ongoing monitoring, medication and dedicated support from the animal care team. Over time, he became known for his bright personality, mischievous streak and distinctive character, forming close bonds with those who looked after him.

The sanctuary said saying goodbye is never easy, adding that Malta became part of their extended family and will always remain in their hearts.

The team thanked everyone involved in his care and described him as a special part of life at the haven.
