Extra classroom space is being created at Gurnard Primary School to accommodate pupils transferring from the recently closed Cowes Primary.

Planners have approved the installation of a new prefabricated modular classroom and the relocation of an existing modular unit on land to the south of the school.

The facilities will include toilets, cloakrooms and storage space, designed to support the increased number of pupils.

Cowes Primary officially closed on 31 August 2025, with remaining pupils offered places at Gurnard from 1 September.

At just over a mile away by road, Gurnard is the nearest alternative school.

In planning documents, the Isle of Wight Council said:

“Although concerns have been raised around the suitability of modular accommodation, they are designed and constructed to meet the same building codes and standards as traditional site-built structures, including fire safety, accessibility and energy efficiency.”

Gurnard Parish Council supported the application but highlighted traffic concerns around Cow Lane, Battery Road, Brambles Lane and Woodvale Road.

It has called for improved signage, stronger enforcement, and a travel survey.
