Ryde’s streets burst into colour and rhythm on Saturday 5th July as the Isle of Wight Mardi Gras 2025 lit up the town in spectacular style.
With the theme “Our Folktastic Isle: The Wheel of the Year”, the parade celebrated traditional Island folklore and seasonal customs, brought to life by 24 schools and community groups from across the Island.
Although high winds meant the much-anticipated giant puppets couldn’t take part, the creativity and enthusiasm of the young performers shone through.
From 3pm, crowds cheered a dazzling display of handmade costumes, music, and dance that transformed the town centre.
Highlights included a revival of the “Jack in the Green” character last paraded in Ryde in 1865, and dynamic performances from groups like Wootton Primary, Carni Beats with Bembridge Primary, and Ryde Academy’s Performing Arts students. Costumes reflected Island traditions such as Shroving, Mackerel Fairs, and the mysterious “Snaark Stangs.”
Earlier in the day, Mini Mardi Gras at Simeon Recreation Ground provided free creative fun for families. Face painting, circus skills, crafts, and performances helped younger children experience the magic of carnival in their own way.
The event also formed part of the Isle of Wight Biosphere Festival, showcasing the Island’s commitment to cultural and environmental sustainability. Many groups used recycled or natural materials in their costumes.
Organisers, New Carnival, thanked Arts Council England, Ryde Town Council, Island Roads, Keert, and all partners for their support. T
hey also praised the volunteers, participants, and spectators who helped make the day unforgettable.
Feedback is welcomed from those who attended, helping shape future events and support funding efforts.
