Man Charged Following Serious Newport Assault That Left Victim With Head Injuries

A 27-year-old man has been charged in connection with a serious assault in Newport that left a man in his 50s requiring hospital treatment.
Police were called to Melbourne Street shortly after midnight last Tuesday (9th June) following reports that a man had been assaulted and suffered significant head injuries.
Emergency services attended the scene, with a large police cordon remaining in place for several hours while officers carried out forensic examinations and enquiries.
The injured man was taken to hospital for treatment. He has since been discharged and is now recovering at home.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says it received the initial report at 00:06 and launched an investigation into the incident.
Following enquiries, officers arrested Ian Harry Willett, 27, of Newport Road, Ventnor.
Willett has since been charged with grievous bodily harm (GBH), robbery and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.
He appeared before Portsmouth Magistrates' Court on Saturday and was remanded in custody. Further court proceedings are expected in the coming days.
Police enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue.
