A car crashing into a bus stop on the main road between Sandown and Shanklin caused significant damage and prompted the temporary closure of the route yesterday (Sunday).

Emergency services were called to Sandown Road, near Skew Bridge, at around 9am, following reports of a single-vehicle collision.

A Ford Fiesta left the carriageway and struck a bus stop, shattering glass panels and scattering debris across the road.

The impact also damaged fencing alongside the nearby Island Line railway.

As a result of the collision, temporary fencing was installed by railway engineers to prevent unauthorised access to the tracks while repairs are arranged.

The driver sustained minor injuries and was assessed by paramedics at the scene.

Sandown Road remained closed for approximately 90 minutes while emergency services dealt with the incident and recovery operators removed the damaged vehicle.

The road reopened shortly after 10:30 once recovery work had been completed and the scene was made safe.
