Specialist police officers are carrying out a forensic investigation in Newport after a cyclist was found with serious injuries, leading to them being airlifted to a major trauma unit.

Emergency services were called to Furrlongs on the Pan Estate shortly before 5pm on Monday after the cyclist was discovered with significant injuries near the local shop.

The casualty was treated at the scene before being flown to Southampton General Hospital by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance for further treatment.

Police have sealed off the area, with cordons in place between Manor Crescent and Royal Exchange while enquiries into the circumstances continue.

The Collision Investigation Unit from the mainland has been brought in to carry out a detailed forensic examination, suggesting officers are exploring a number of possibilities around what happened.

Furrlongs remains closed and is expected to stay shut for the rest of the evening.

An update from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary is expected on Tuesday morning.
