Firefighters from across the Isle of Wight have been called to a fire at a fish and chip shop in Ryde this morning (Sunday).

Crews from Ryde, Newport and Shanklin were sent to The Codfather on Esplanade at around 9:45am after reports of a blaze at the premises.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reel jets and main jets to bring the fire under control.

The shop and nearby properties were evacuated safely and no injuries have been reported.

The fire is believed to have started inside the commercial premises before spreading to the flat above.

After tackling the main blaze, crews began checking for hotspots and used ventilation fans to clear smoke from the building.

The aerial ladder platform from Newport was later brought in to inspect the roof area.

Traffic along Esplanade heading towards Appley remained moving, although delays built up in the area.

Vehicles were later diverted through Ryde Bus Station while emergency services continued their work.

Fire crews are expected to remain at the scene for some time.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
