Motorists in the Bay area are facing several more weeks of disruption after temporary three-way traffic lights were installed at the busy Lake High Street junction.

The lights have been in place since 3 February, causing significant delays at one of the Island’s key routes.

The disruption follows a collision on 29 January, when Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary were called to Newport Road, Lake, after a white Ford Transit Connect struck traffic signal equipment and left the scene.

Damage was caused to two traffic signal poles, which also affected underground cabling.

Although Island Roads initially attempted to keep the junction operating using one remaining signal pole, it was later deemed unsafe to continue, and the permanent traffic lights were switched off.

Temporary lights were then installed.

In a similar situation to the lengthy disruption experienced at Downend near Newport, a specialist replacement part now needs to be manufactured and sourced from the mainland.

It has now been confirmed that the necessary component is not expected to be fitted until early to mid-April — meaning drivers could face a further five to seven weeks of delays in the area.

An Island Roads spokesperson said:

“Two traffic signal poles at this junction were severely damaged in a reported hit-and-run incident at the end of January, which is currently under police investigation.
“Due to both above-ground and underground damage, it was not possible to operate the junction safely with a single signal, so temporary lights were installed while specialist repairs are arranged.
“We recognise this is a busy junction and are working with our supplier to complete the repairs as quickly as possible.
"The specialist parts required have been ordered and are being manufactured. Current estimates indicate completion in the first half of next month and we will bring this forward if resources become available sooner.
“We apologise for any inconvenience.”

Motorists are being advised to allow extra time for journeys through the area while the temporary traffic management remains in place.
