The Isle of Wight Youth Justice Service (YJS) has been awarded the highest possible rating for its work supporting young people and families on the Island.

The service has been placed in Quadrant 1 by the Youth Justice Board — a category reserved for youth justice teams demonstrating strong performance, effective leadership and high-quality practice.

The recognition follows an assessment by the board’s Performance Oversight Board, which praised the Island’s team for sustained improvements in data quality, service delivery and partnership working.

Officials also highlighted the service’s work embedding the “Child First” approach, which focuses on putting the needs and wellbeing of young people at the centre of youth justice services.

The board said it intends to share the Isle of Wight’s approach with other youth justice teams across the country.

Ashley Whittaker, who also chairs the Island’s Youth Justice Board, said the achievement reflects the dedication of staff.

“To move from a third-quadrant position two years ago to Quadrant 1 today is a remarkable accomplishment and a clear reflection of the team’s skill, commitment and determination,” he said.
“The service has worked tirelessly to improve outcomes for children, families and victims on the Island.
"Their creativity, problem-solving and willingness to embrace new approaches have all played a major part in this success.”

He added that while the recognition is welcome, the service will continue working to further strengthen support for young people.

Ruth Hayles said the national recognition meant a great deal to the team.

“Our focus has always been on supporting children and young people to make positive changes in their lives, and to see that work acknowledged nationally is incredibly rewarding,” she said.
“Most importantly, we have listened to children and families and adapted our approach to meet their needs more effectively.”

She added that the team remains committed to ensuring every young person on the Isle of Wight has the opportunity for a safer and more positive future.
