Volunteers from across the Isle of Wight and Hampshire have been recognised for their dedication to supporting communities and helping keep residents safe.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) hosted its annual volunteer recognition evening at its headquarters in Eastleigh on Tuesday (2 June), bringing together volunteers, their families, fire service colleagues and community leaders during Volunteers' Week.

Now in its fourth year, the event celebrated the contribution made by around 100 volunteers who support the fire service in a variety of roles, including delivering home fire safety visits, assisting with community events, helping to run Fire Cadet units and supporting training exercises.

Volunteers shared personal stories about the difference they make across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, highlighting the vital role they play in supporting vulnerable residents and strengthening local communities.

Community volunteers Deb Dargue and Tracey Van Leeuween, who regularly carry out Home Fire Safety Visits, said they often meet people who have not seen anyone for days or even weeks.

They said:

"On many occasions we visit people who haven't seen anyone for days or even weeks and as volunteers we have the time to give them so they can feel seen, heard and safe in their own homes.
"We love being able to help people and enable them to feel safe in their own homes for as long as possible."

A strong Isle of Wight presence was recognised during the evening, with Sandown Fire Cadet Instructor Lee Parrotte receiving the Kevin Morrison Fire Cadet Instructor of the Year Award.

The accolade, introduced last year in memory of former instructor Kevin Morrison, recognises individuals who embody the fire service's values and inspire young people through their commitment and leadership.

Speaking after receiving the award, Lee said:

"I want to say a massive thank you for this award. It's truly unexpected and a huge honour.
"For me, it has always been about contributing to help young people and supporting the local community."

The evening also included a special video message from HIWFRS Fire Cadets, thanking the volunteer instructors who help run cadet units across the region.

Over the last year, volunteers contributed 6,349 hours of their time supporting the fire service and wider community between April 2025 and March 2026.

Volunteer Programme Manager Lee Joss praised their efforts, saying:

"Our volunteers are truly inspirational and their enthusiasm to assist no matter how large or small the task is admirable."

Head of Prevention Karen Farr added:

"Each one of you is valued and appreciated."
