For the first time in nearly 30 years, Royal Yacht Britannia is returning to Cowes as part of a new exhibition celebrating the town’s rich royal sailing heritage.

‘Sailing Through Royal History’, created by The Royal Yacht Britannia Trust, will be hosted at Commodore’s House – the former workshop of legendary yacht designer Uffa Fox.

Running from 31 July to 29 August, the exhibition coincides with major events including the Cowes Week Bicentenary Regatta, as well as the prestigious Edinburgh Cup and Marblehead Trophy.

A key highlight will be COWESLIP, a historic Flying Fifteen keelboat designed and built in Cowes by Uffa Fox.

The boat was gifted to Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1947 and has recently been restored locally. It will be displayed on the quayside, showcasing its deep ties to the town.

Visitors can explore the story of royal sailing and Cowes’ maritime legacy through images, video, and immersive virtual and augmented reality experiences, including Britannia’s long-standing presence at Cowes Week.

Alongside the exhibition, a series of waterside panels on The Parade will highlight the ‘Racing Royals’ – including Edward VII, George V and Prince Philip – and their contribution to Cowes’ sailing history.

Chief Executive of The Royal Yacht Britannia Trust, Franck Bruyère, said the exhibition marks a major milestone for the organisation.

He added: “With this being our first touring exhibition, we are proud to launch ‘Sailing Through Royal History’ in Cowes, one of the UK’s most important sailing destinations.

We’re delighted to be working with the local community to be part of this special bicentenary year of Cowes Week.”
