Thousands of vapers on the Isle of Wight could soon be paying significantly more, as a new tax on vaping products is introduced across the UK.
From 1 October, the Vaping Products Duty will add £2.20 to every 10ml of e-liquid – increasing to £2.64 with VAT.
The changes are expected to push up the cost of vaping for regular users, with some estimates suggesting monthly increases of between £26 and £79 depending on usage.
The Isle of Wight has higher-than-average smoking rates compared to much of the UK, meaning vaping has become an important tool for people trying to quit.
Health organisations say e-cigarettes have helped millions of adults move away from tobacco, but there are concerns the new tax could make that harder.
Industry experts warn the biggest price increases will affect lower-cost products – often the most popular option for those switching from smoking.
There are also fears some people could return to cigarettes or turn to unregulated products if costs rise too sharply.
The government says the new duty is part of efforts to improve public health, while keeping vaping cheaper than smoking overall.
Businesses selling vaping products have already been told to register ahead of the changes, which are expected to generate significant revenue for the Treasury.
