It was another weather-soaked weekend of grassroots rugby across the Island — but that didn’t stop strong performances from both Vectis RFC and Ventnor RFC.

Vectis Colts Run Riot In Hampshire

Despite relentless rain and heavy pitches, Vectis RFC’s Colts delivered a standout result, storming to a 56–0 away victory over Trojans Rugby Club.

In difficult conditions, the young Warriors showed impressive handling and discipline, with the emphatic scoreline reflecting weeks of hard work on the training ground.

Coaches praised the squad’s attitude and resilience, while parents and supporters were thanked for braving the elements to back the team.

Back on the Island, Vectis also highlighted the dedication of their wider playing groups, with players turning out for training despite flooded routes and biting temperatures — a real show of commitment across the club.

Off the pitch, Vectis RFC announced they have joined LooseHeadz, a rugby-focused mental health charity.

The partnership will provide free mental health training — including youth awareness — to players, parents, coaches and supporters, reinforcing the club’s commitment to wellbeing alongside performance.

Ventnor Dig Deep For Away Draw

Meanwhile, Ventnor 1st XV showed real character on the road, battling to a hard-fought 20–20 draw away to Winchester RFC 3rd XV in Hampshire Counties 3.

Ventnor started brightly, with strong set-piece work laying the platform for an early try in the corner.

After Winchester responded with a maul score, the Islanders regained control before half-time through Joe Coghlan, giving Ventnor a 12–7 lead at the break.

The second half swung back and forth, with Winchester capitalising on line-out pressure to edge ahead, only for Ventnor to respond with another well-worked try to retake the lead.

Injuries and a yellow card made the closing stages tough for the visitors, but they showed real spirit in defence before Josh Ford calmly slotted a late penalty to secure the draw.

The result slightly extends Ventnor’s lead over Tottonians at the top of the table, although their rivals still have a game in hand.

Harvey Wheeler picked up Man of the Match honours after an influential all-round performance.

Looking Ahead

With Six Nations fever in full swing and a busy calendar of fixtures and events coming up — including the Isle of Wight Rugby Festival later this spring — both clubs are encouraging new players and supporters to get involved.

Whether it’s competitive rugby, youth development or community spirit, Island rugby continues to thrive — whatever the weather throws at it.
