The Isle of Wight Council’s Chair joined veterans, volunteers, and history enthusiasts on Sunday for the Island’s VJ Day commemorations at the Bus and Coach Museum in Ryde.

The event marked 80 years since the surrender of Japan on 15 August 1945 — the day that brought World War II to an end. By its conclusion, an estimated 70 million lives had been lost worldwide.

Hosted by the Bus and Coach Museum’s Chairman, Derek Priddle, and supported by a team of dedicated volunteers, the day offered a poignant mix of remembrance and education.

Cllr Ian Dore said:

"Recognising and celebrating VJ Day is vital to honour those who served and sacrificed during World War II.
"It marks the end of global conflict, the liberation of nations, and the beginning of peace and reconstruction. By commemorating it — especially as it’s often overshadowed by VE Day — we preserve historical memory, give thanks to veterans, and reaffirm our commitment to preventing future global conflicts."

The museum grounds were brought to life with entertainment, historic vehicles — including a WRVS van — and members of the Vectis 40s Vintage Group.

Their wartime displays included a recreated shop, Air Raid Precautions, the Land Army, local hospitals, and the Home Guard.

Cllr Dore added:

"The location felt perfect for this commemoration. With the set dressing, smells, and actors, it wasn’t hard to imagine stepping back into the mid-1940s.
"I even had the privilege of meeting a gentleman who once worked on the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight — hearing him tell stories of clambering in and out of the Lancaster was unforgettable.
"It was a marvellous event, rich in history, and the organisers and volunteers should be very proud."

This Friday, a national two-minute silence will take place at 12 noon, giving the nation a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made eight decades ago.
