Isle of Wight East MP Joe Robertson has urged the new Local Government Minister, Alison McGovern, to recognise the Island’s unique status during forthcoming local government reorganisation (LGR).
His call follows a vote by Isle of Wight councillors last night, which failed to agree on a proposal to submit to Government ahead of the 26 September deadline. The Government is reshaping local councils in England, including creating new Combined Mayoral Authorities. The Isle of Wight entered the priority scheme last year after a request from council leader Phil Jordan.
Mr Robertson said the Island’s “unique geography and community” must be protected, noting previous recognition when the Isle of Wight became the first Unitary Authority in 1995 and later secured two dedicated parliamentary constituencies.
In his letter, the MP argued that most councillors want the Island to remain independent from Hampshire. He criticised council leadership for presenting incomplete options, describing this as a failure that led to the “no option” vote. He also warned that additional mainland authorities could weaken the Island’s influence on a Mayoral Board.
Mr Robertson has requested an urgent meeting with the Minister and invited her to visit the Island to hear Islanders’ views directly.
