The Isle of Wight could soon operate on its own time zone under new proposals aimed at promoting a slower pace of life and boosting tourism.

The idea, which has been informally dubbed “Island Time”, would see the Isle of Wight set its clocks 10 minutes behind the UK mainland.

Supporters say the move would reflect the Island’s unique identity and encourage residents and visitors alike to embrace a more relaxed way of living.

Tourism representatives have suggested the change could give holidaymakers “a little extra time to enjoy sunsets, beaches and local attractions” — while also helping the Island stand out even more as a destination.

A spokesperson for Telephones Britain - with runs the Verbal Clock Co - said:

“The Isle of Wight has always done things a little differently.
"Creating our own time zone would celebrate that independence and offer a symbolic shift towards a healthier work-life balance.”

However, the proposal has already raised questions — particularly around travel and commuting.

Services operated by Wightlink and Red Funnel would need to adjust timetables, while businesses dealing with the mainland could face complications.

There are also concerns about how the change would impact public services, including links with NHS and emergency response coordination.

Despite this, some residents have welcomed the idea, saying it reflects the Island’s character.

One local said:

“Everything already feels a bit more relaxed here — this would just make it official.”

The proposal is still in its early stages, but discussions are expected to continue over the coming months.
