New Government figures show that 194 people on the Isle of Wight accessed the Breathing Space scheme last year, as the rising cost of living continues to affect households locally.
Also known as the Debt Respite scheme, Breathing Space gives those struggling with debt a 60-day period without additional interest, charges or creditor action, allowing time to seek advice and put a plan in place.
National Debtline, one of the organisations able to enrol people onto the scheme, says demand for support could increase further this year as household bills continue to rise and global pressures impact finances.
Across the UK, more than 89,000 people entered the scheme in 2025 – roughly one in every 550 adults – reflecting the same financial challenges being seen on the Island.
Jack Sporcic, a debt adviser at National Debtline, said many people underestimate how quickly debt can escalate, with missed payments often leading to enforcement action and added stress.
He explained that Breathing Space can offer vital time for people to speak to an adviser, understand their options and prevent debts from getting worse.
Separate figures from the Money and Pensions Service suggest around 13% of people on the Isle of Wight may currently need debt advice.
