Island Cancer Review Brings Patients And NHS Leaders Together

More than 70 patients, carers, healthcare professionals and members of the public have come together to help shape the future of cancer services on the Isle of Wight.

The "Coming Together for Cancer" event, organised by Healthwatch Isle of Wight and commissioned by Wessex Cancer Alliance, took place at the Riverside Centre in Newport.

The event centred on the findings of Healthwatch's Cancer Services Review, which gathered feedback from more than 200 Island cancer patients and carers. Attendees explored eight key themes identified during the review, highlighting positive experiences alongside areas where improvements are needed.

A panel of senior NHS leaders, clinicians and healthcare representatives responded to the findings before taking questions from the audience.

Healthwatch Isle of Wight manager Joanna Smith said the event demonstrated the value of bringing patients and decision-makers together, adding that people wanted services that were joined up, compassionate and responsive to their needs.

Alongside discussions, the day included afternoon tea, live music from a ukulele band, a Sing for Life workshop and a sound bath session, giving attendees an opportunity to relax and reflect.

Healthwatch Isle of Wight says it will now work with healthcare partners to monitor progress against the recommendations, with a follow-up review planned in three months' time. The full Cancer Services Review 2026 is due to be published in the coming weeks.

Engagement Officer Nathan Holt said the event showed what could be achieved when people shared their experiences and health leaders committed to listening and delivering change.
