Communities across the UK have come together this month to raise thousands of pounds in support of older people – by taking the plunge into icy waters.

Colleagues and homeowners from McCarthy Stone developments have raised more than £21,000 through a series of “Chilly Sea Dip” fundraising events, held at coastal locations across the south of England, including the Isle of Wight.

More than 250 people took part, either braving the cold sea themselves or showing their support from the shoreline, creating a strong sense of community and togetherness.

Each event had its own unique feel, with sunshine and live music in Bournemouth, while participants further south embraced the occasion with colourful fancy dress – including outfits such as lobsters, penguins and bumblebees.

After their chilly dip, fundraisers were welcomed back to shore with hot drinks and homemade cakes, served by volunteers.

The community spirit extended even further, brave souls in Southend organising their own dip while abroad so they could still take part in the initiative.

Initial donations totalled just over £9,000, but this has now risen to more than £21,000 thanks to match funding from the McCarthy Stone Foundation and Gift Aid contributions.

Money raised will go towards supporting the Foundation’s work to improve the health and wellbeing of older people, helping to tackle loneliness and strengthen community connections.

A spokesperson for McCarthy Stone said they were “incredibly proud” to see so many people come together, describing the events as inspiring and full of energy and shared purpose.

The Foundation has also thanked organisers, volunteers and supporters who helped make the fundraising effort such a success.
