Helicopter Joins Fight Against Headon Warren Wildfire

A helicopter has joined the firefighting operation at Headon Warren this morning (Friday), as crews continue working to bring the devastating wildfire under control.
The aircraft has been deployed to support Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service teams tackling the blaze from both the air and the ground after the fire broke out on Thursday.
The wildfire has already destroyed a large area of rare heathland at the National Trust site, with thick smoke visible across parts of the West Wight.
Firefighters have remained at the scene throughout the night, with around 60 personnel continuing efforts to contain the blaze.
The helicopter is now helping crews prevent the fire from spreading further across the internationally important landscape.
Headon Warren is one of the Isle of Wight's most environmentally significant sites, supporting rare wildlife, protected species and valuable heathland habitat.
Residents and visitors are still being urged to stay away from the area while emergency services continue their work.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

It's heartbreaking to see such a valuable ecosystem like Headon Warren being so severely devastated. I hope the firefighters can quickly bring the fire under control. While anxiously reading the news, I suddenly saw a picture of a helicopter circling the hill, which reminded me of the driving scenes in eggycar — on screen, the bumpy terrain makes you fear dropping the egg, but in real life, every flight path, every step taken by the firefighters on that rugged terrain is a battle to save the life of an entire natural area. I hope everyone is safe!
