Pupils from Godshill and St Blasius Primary Schools have helped create a new poetry trail at Naturezones after taking inspiration from visits to the Island nature reserve.

Year 4 and Year 5 children wrote and illustrated a collection of haiku poems following their time exploring the site's woodland and meadow.

Haiku is a traditional Japanese form of poetry made up of three non-rhyming lines with a syllable pattern of five, seven and five.

Among the poems created were reflections on wildlife including dragonflies, wasps and the natural world around them.

One poem by Annabelle reads:

Flying all day long, Soaring through the breeze all day Having so much fun.

Another, by Samantha, focuses on dragonflies:

Blue males, golden females Zipping around the pond, quick Lands with open wings

Angela Hewitt, founder and director of Naturezones, said:

"This has been a long dreamed-of project.
"We are thrilled that at last it has come to fruition. I would like to thank the teachers involved for making it happen."

The poems have now been installed as part of a poetry trail through the woodland and meadow at Naturezones.

Visitors can explore the trail when Naturezones is open to the public on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Entry is free for children.
