Free water bottle refill stations are to be installed in Lake, Sandown and Shanklin in a bid to reduce plastic waste and make it easier for people to stay hydrated while out and about.

The three projects have secured funding through the Sea-Changers Coastal Fountain Fund, with the Isle of Wight Council supporting successful bids from Lake Parish Council, Sandown Town Council and Shanklin Town Council.

A distinctive dolphin-shaped fountain made from recycled fishing nets recovered from south west beaches will be installed at Lake Cliff Gardens, while refill stations will also be located on Shanklin Esplanade at Hope Road and in Sandown's Eastern Gardens near the Sundial Café.

The fountains are due to be operational by summer 2026 and are designed to encourage the use of reusable water bottles, helping reduce single-use plastic pollution while supporting residents and visitors using the Island's seafronts.

Alex Minns, the Isle of Wight Council's Service Director for Community Regeneration and Economy, said the project will improve access to free drinking water while supporting healthier lifestyles and tackling plastic pollution.
