Dogs Bring Plenty Of Smiles To Cowes Care Home For National Dog Day

Residents at a Cowes care home were given plenty of reasons to smile when a number of four-legged visitors dropped in to mark National Dog Day.

Old Charlton House welcomed several dogs and their owners on Wednesday (26 August), after Activities Coordinator Debbie Webb put out a call on social media for well-behaved pets to visit the home.

The Island community responded, with dogs visiting throughout the day and giving residents the chance to spend time with them, offer treats and enjoy a cuddle.

The visits also brought back memories for residents who had owned dogs themselves, with many recalling past pets and sharing stories about them.

Dog owners said it was lovely to see the reaction from residents, with some even reporting that their pets were so tired after their visit they went straight to sleep when they got home.

The benefits of pet therapy can include helping to reduce stress and anxiety, while providing companionship and encouraging positive memories.

The response has been so positive that the visiting dogs and their owners have already promised to return, with some further visits now booked.

Debbie Webb said it had been a "magical day", adding that residents often miss the interaction they once had with their pets after moving into care.

She thanked the owners who gave up their time to visit people they had never met before, saying it was "absolutely marvellous" that they were willing to come back.
