With a few weeks still to go before the new school year begins, Barnardo’s is inviting parents, children, and families across the Isle of Wight to take part in a summer programme of free activities and support.
The charity’s three Family Hubs and Centres on the Island are offering everything from fun play sessions for children and young people to essential advice for parents – all at no cost.
Sarah Riddick, Barnardo’s Family Support Team Lead in Ryde, said the summer holidays can be a challenging time for many families:
“The summer holidays can bring added pressure, including financial strain and the challenge of keeping children engaged at home. Many families feel overwhelmed as children request activities and outings that are simply unaffordable.”
Claire Steen, Barnardo’s Children’s Services Manager for the Island, added that the summer break often sees regular children’s activities pause or change, leaving parents to juggle keeping multiple children entertained:
“All of our activities are free and designed for the whole family, from newborns to older children. Families tell us our sessions keep kids entertained without the stress of big spending, and our drop-in format is a great way to meet others.”
Activities include Summer Pop-in and Play sessions, with water play, painting, reading, and play dough.
The hubs also host daily Health Visitor clinics and Breastfeeding Stay and Play sessions, giving parents a relaxed and supportive space to feed, chat, and connect with trained peer supporters.
Barnardo’s says families can drop in for activities or simply come for advice on local low-cost things to do, community groups, or tailored family support.
