Crimestoppers has launched a new campaign across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight aimed at encouraging football fans to enjoy the World Cup safely.

The "Keep It Football" campaign coincides with England's opening match of the tournament and focuses on reducing violence, public disorder and other offences sometimes linked to major sporting events.

The charity says football is a positive force that brings communities together, but warns that heightened emotions and alcohol can occasionally contribute to anti-social behaviour, violence and other incidents.

It also highlights concerns that reports of domestic abuse can increase during major tournaments.

Crimestoppers is also urging people to be aware of so-called "meets" — pre-arranged confrontations between rival groups of supporters — which can pose risks to both participants and members of the public.

As part of the campaign, residents are being encouraged to enjoy matchdays responsibly, look out for others and report information about planned violence or criminal activity anonymously.

Beth Simpson, Regional Manager for South Central West at Crimestoppers, said the campaign aims to help fans enjoy the tournament while keeping communities safe.

Crimestoppers is an independent charity that allows people to report information about crime anonymously.
