Former Newport School Could Provide Extra SEND Places

A former school site in Newport could be used to provide additional accommodation for children with complex special educational needs and disabilities.

The Isle of Wight Council has submitted plans for a new link building and external works at the former Barton Primary School on Green Street.

The proposals would support the expansion of Medina House School, which is increasing from 168 to 204 places.

The council plans to use the former Barton site for the additional provision from September 2027.

It says the expansion will help more children with complex needs access suitable education closer to home, while reducing the need for costly placements off the Island.

Council officer Jade Kennett said the new accommodation would be “modern” and “purpose-designed” to meet children's educational, sensory and behavioural needs.

The council's agent, ERMC, says the plans will make use of the existing, currently unused school buildings.

No significant changes are proposed to the outside of the former school or the detached cottage building.

A new link structure would connect the two buildings and allow them to operate together, while the wider layout of the site would remain largely unchanged.

A public consultation on the plans runs until October 9, with a decision expected on November 4.
