The Cowes Floating Bridge will be out of action later this month while it undergoes its regular autumn refit.

From Monday 22 September until Friday 3 October, the chain ferry, which links Cowes and East Cowes across the River Medina, will be temporarily withdrawn from service to allow for essential maintenance.

During the scheduled works, engineers will carry out a number of key tasks including the replacement of the drive chains, servicing of the guidewheels, changing of the hydraulic oil, and remedial work to the prows.

These routine measures are aimed at ensuring the long-term safety and reliability of the vessel, which provides a vital link for commuters, residents and visitors alike.

While the Floating Bridge is in dock, a replacement launch service will operate across the river.

This will be available for pedestrians and cyclists, helping to maintain access between the two towns during the maintenance period.

The Isle of Wight Council has apologised for any inconvenience caused, and is encouraging regular users of the service to plan ahead for their journeys.

The Floating Bridge plays a key role in local transport on the Island, carrying thousands of people across the Medina every week.

Its annual refit is a statutory requirement, designed to keep the vessel in safe working condition for the year ahead.
