Firefighters were called to a convenience store in Shanklin on Monday morning after smoke was seen billowing from the premises.

Crews from Shanklin, Ventnor and Ryde were dispatched to Premier on Regent Street at around 9am following reports of a fire inside the shop.

Staff and customers safely evacuated the building as black smoke began issuing from the front entrance.

It is understood a member of the public acted quickly to tackle the fire before emergency services arrived, using fire extinguishers obtained from a neighbouring business and another nearby location.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the store and identified a faulty slush machine as the source of the blaze.

The appliance was removed from the premises and the situation was swiftly brought under control.

A small cordon was established outside the shop while crews dealt with the incident, although Regent Street remained open to both pedestrians and traffic throughout.
