Emergency Services Respond To Collision In Sandford

Emergency crews are on the scene in Sandford this afternoon (Thursday) following a road traffic collision.


Police, fire and ambulance teams were called to Shanklin Road (A3020) at around 1.50pm.


The road is currently blocked at the junction with Redhill Lane, with Southern Vectis confirming its Route 2 buses are being diverted via Blackwater and Godshill.


The collision has also reportedly caused damage to some local SGN infrastructure.


Drivers are being asked to avoid the area while the incident is dealt with.


A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary confirmed:

"Emergency services are currently dealing with an incident on the A3020 Shanklin Road where a lorry has left the carriageway, causing a gas leak.
"This happened between the junctions with Redhill Lane and Godshill Park Road at about 1.30pm.
"Nearby residents are being evacuated as a precautionary measure while work is done to repair the gas main.
"Please avoid the area at this time. We will update you when road closures are lifted.

UPDATE 3.45pm:


The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Service has confirmed lorry crashed into a wall in Godshill this afternoon damaging a gas main.


A statement send to Isle of Wight Radio said:

"Crews from Shanklin and Newport were alerted to the incident on Shanklin Road at around half one this afternoon.
"Nearby properties have been evacuated as firefighters work to make the scene safe.
"Police and SGN engineers are also in attendance."
