Emergency services were called to a residential street in Newport this morning (Wednesday) after a worker became unwell while on scaffolding.

Firefighters from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, alongside paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, were dispatched to Berry Close, off Furrlongs, at around 9.15am.

Multiple crews attended the scene, including pumping appliances from Newport and Ryde, as well as an aerial ladder platform and command unit.

Ambulance resources were also sent, with the quiet cul-de-sac quickly filling with emergency vehicles.

It’s understood the man had been working on a roof when he was taken ill at height, prompting a coordinated rescue operation.

A spokesperson for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said:

“Firefighters in Newport responded to an incident on Berry Close shortly before 9am this morning, where a man required rescue from scaffolding.
"Crews successfully carried out the operation using an aerial ladder platform, bringing the individual safely to the ground.
"Firefighters returned to the station shortly after 10:30am.”

Crews worked to safely bring the casualty down from the scaffolding using the aerial ladder platform.

He was then transferred into the care of paramedics and taken by ambulance to St Mary’s Hospital for further treatment.

Berry Close was temporarily blocked while the incident was ongoing, but the scene has since been cleared following the successful rescue.
