Residents on the Isle of Wight have been given clarity over the future of local government, after the Government confirmed the Island will remain a single unitary authority.
The decision, made as part of Local Government Reorganisation (LGR), means the Isle of Wight will not be merged with any neighbouring councils.
Leader of the council, Phil Jordan, has welcomed the announcement, describing it as a “hard-won victory” for the Island.
He said the outcome provides much-needed certainty for residents, businesses and communities, adding that the Isle of Wight’s unique identity and challenges had been recognised.
Cllr Jordan said significant work had taken place behind the scenes over a number of months to make the case to Government, including engagement with partners and officials in Westminster.
He added that the decision is particularly important given the financial pressures facing councils, as it removes the uncertainty and potential disruption that a merger could have caused.
Looking ahead, Cllr Jordan said the focus will now shift to strengthening the Island’s economy, supporting local services and securing fair funding from Government.
The council says it will continue working with partners to ensure the Isle of Wight is in a strong position to move forward under its existing structure.
