Residents and road users are being reminded that major stabilisation works at St John’s Road in Wroxall will get underway next week, following the partial collapse of the embankment which caused significant disruption.

The scheme, commissioned by Isle of Wight Council and delivered by Island Roads, will involve removing tonnes of unstable earth and constructing a new retaining wall.

The replacement wall will be reprofiled to improve visibility for motorists and for passengers using the nearby bus stop.

Full Road Closure From 2nd March

Work is due to begin on 2nd March and is expected to last for eight weeks.

Due to the scale of the embankment works, a 24-hour road closure will be in place between Appuldurcombe Road and Whiteley Bank for the duration of the project.

Redhill Lane will also be closed throughout the works.

Subject to progress on site, Island Roads aims to reopen St John’s Road under two-way traffic-light control for the Easter Bank Holiday.

Access to properties will be maintained at all times.

‘Very Much Needed’ Work

A spokesperson for Island Roads said:

“We know residents of Wroxall have had their fair share of work to contend with but, as with the recent road surfacing, they will know that this work is also very much needed.
“We will endeavour to complete the project as soon as possible and will of course keep the local community updated on progress.”

Local Contractor Appointed

Island Roads will partner with local firm DDGA to deliver the project.

The company has previously completed specialist schemes including the Gills Cliff Road steel netting project and the re-decking of the Cement Mills Viaduct on the Cowes–Newport cycle track.

Island Roads has met with Wroxall Parish Council and the local ward councillor to discuss the plans. Affected residents should also have received letters outlining further details.

Shuttle Bus To Continue

The shuttle bus service currently connecting Wroxall and Ventnor during ongoing highway improvement works will continue operating the same temporary timetable throughout the embankment project.

St John’s Road was initially closed before two-way traffic lights were installed for several months from late 2022 into early 2023, after tonnes of earth slipped from the embankment and spread across the carriageway.

Temporary stabilisation measures were put in place in February 2023.

The forthcoming works are intended to provide a long-term solution.
